  1. Literature is words set apart in some way 
  2. from ordinary everyday communication. In the 
  3. ancient oral traditions, before stories and 
  4. poems were written down, literature had a 
  5. mainly public function-mythic and religious. 
  6. As literary works came to be preserved in 
  7. writing, and, eventually, printed, their role 
  8. became more private, serving as a vehicle for 
  9. the exploration and expression of emotion and 
  10. the human situation.
